The lighting of the play makes both the performance and the stage look very good and is the results of the tough work done by Howell Binkley. Michael Clark holds the accountability for the first projections. It is being superbly promoted by the producers, who are not only reaching to the explicit Broadway audience but are also handling to reach out to the non-traditional Broadway audience due to the radio ads on the radio stations.

And what a story it is. I had no idea all that went on in the lives of these gifted artists. I have always enjoyed Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, but I didn't own any recordings. After seeing this show, I am going to add them to my music collection, the music is timeless and it makes me feel so good.The only negative I can say about this show is that it ended. If he was the understudy I can't imagine what the other guy was like because Jarrod's performance was almost perfection.I will tell everyone I know to go and see this show, and I may have to go and see it again, which would be a first."

One of the reviews said the show was awesome. " The singing was phenomenal and the sound was great. All the actors that played the Four Seasons were great, but the guy who played Frankie Valli was phenomenal. I thought he was better than the real Frankie Valli. Prior to the show I was OK with the Four Seasons music, but after hearing it in this show it sounded much better to me. The quality of their voices, how they turned up the volume on the sound and, to me, slightly increased the tempo, made the songs sound outstanding, better than Four Seasons CDs that I had had heard over the years. The other part that I liked was the fact that there was an actual story. The songs were very well placed, but there was a real story and real dialog. I would highly recommend this show to anyone, no matter what age."

A concert tour to Europe is no longer new to American singer Madonna. Her last tour was the Confessions tour which started in the U.S. and ended in Europe. Sticky and Sweet kicked off in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium (which has a capacity of 60,000 people) and all Madonna tickets were sold out.

It was reported that her seventh world concert tour raked in a total of $194.8 million USD and this with a total of 60 shows. The attendance was well over 1.2 million throughout North America, Europe and Japan. This concert tour is currently the highest grossing tour for a female artist.

This year, we see Madonna heading out on her eighth world concert tour entitled Sticky & Sweet Tour. There is a huge sense of anticipation and critics are on their toes as they all watch if this 2008 concert tour would break the Confessions Tour record. Sticky & Sweet is set out to support her studio album entitled Hard Candy. This is her eleventh studio album and she aims to give her best once more to the series of concerts. Tina Turner’s shows have been described as “electrifying”, “awesome” and a “once in a lifetime experience”. This cannot be described as an overstatement. Tina Turner concerts are indeed all these and more. There are numerous reasons s to why she puts in such great performances. Or it could be because of her personality as a strong, willful and passionate woman.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee, Tina Turner first performed in Ike Turner’s shows in St. Louis. Ike changed her name to Tina after Sheena: Queen of the Jungle and they became The Ike & Tina Turner Revue. She married Ike in 1962. Working a heavy touring circuit, they rose to fame during the 1960s and 1970s, recording songs like “A Fool in Love”, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” and “River Deep, Mountain High”.

Tina Turner’s tumultuous marriage life continued well into the 70s. Tina’s husband was a cocaine user who mismanaged the band and he produced Tina’s first solo album. It did not do well commercially. In 1976, over the Fourth of July weekend, Tina Turner finally left Ike Turner when he beat her before a Dallas show. She had nothing but thirty-six cents in her wallet. She left behind her abusive marriage as well as breached contracts.
She lived rough and appeared in TV shows to supplement her income. She finally got a divorce from Ike in 1976 and with trepidation commenced in earnest her solo career. She finally got the recognition she craved for in 1984 when she released her fifth album, Private Dancer. The album earned her three top ten singles in the United States, topped the charts in Europe UK and Australia and established her as a rock diva. She earned Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year all in the 1985 Grammys.

The unstoppable Ms Turner also made forays into film appearing in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, sung numerous soundtracks for movies, wrote her autobiography I, Tina and toured in Europe, the US and Latin America. In the latter, she performed for 184,000 fans and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the single performer to have performed to the largest paying crowd in history.

For most people with a lifetime of achievements, time to settle back and reflect on life would be in order. But not this lady, as she is coming out of 8 years of retirement. Ok, ok....the Jonas Brothers ARE are the next big thing NOW (or is that the current big thing!) Although still very much popular in the US and Europe, their upbeat music appeals to the 10 to 14-year-old girl market. Seen in Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows like Zooey 101 and Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers have staged their own revolution in the pop music scene.

The Jonas Brothers as a band began with the youngest in the group, Nicholas Jonas who had his first role in a Broadway show at age seven. He was originally signed as a single act and released a self-titled album with songs like “When You Look me in the Eye”, “Dear God” and “Time For me to Fly”. Around about the same time brother Joseph also performed in Broadway’s La Boheme.

Columbia Records president Greenberg decided to sign the brothers and they started 2005 touring with Jesse McCartney, the Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, the Cheetah Girls and the Click Five. The Jonas Brothers released their debut single “Mandy” the same year and had several of their songs featured in shows like Zooey 101, Disney Mania 4 and American Dragon Jake Long.

The group was dropped by Columbia but signed on with Hollywood records in 2007. They released their album self-titled Jonas Brothers and entered the Billboard Hot 200 in the fifth spot. They continued on making television appearances in Hannah Montana and performed at the Miss Teen USA. In January of this year, the Jonas Brothers jumpstarted their Look Me in The Eyes Tour with a show in Tucson, Arizona.

This year has been an exciting one for young trio, with sellout shows around the country and the release of the third album. The Jonas Brothers played some of their A Little Bit Longer songs in their tour, as well as opening acts for Avril Lavigne. The Disney Channel has also aired their reality series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream and has just wrapped up the Disney Original Movie Camp Rock. Come summer 2008, a massive tour is planned, and they will start touring to promote their latest album.

The Jonas Brothers has been consistently compared to the Hanson Brothers who achieved considerable fame in the 1990s. But unlike Hanson, the Jonas Brothers have more attitude when it comes to their melodies. Their subject revolves around contemporary teen issues such as school, love and hope for the future. Their influences range from the Backstreet Boys to Weird Al Yankovic.

Coldplay has been compared to bands like U2 and Oasis, both of which come from the UK. The comparison is easy to understand since the music and subject matter can be similar. Coldplay shares the same political convictions of Bono and the rest of U2 and the melodic and hauntingly abrasive rock songs of Oasis.

Coldplay got the world’s attention with the release of their first album in 2000 titled Parachutes which shot through the top of the Albums Chart in the UK. It was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize and earned the Best Alternative Music Album award in the 2002 Grammys. It bore their most recognized single “Yellow”.

The second album, A Rush of Cold Blood to the Head was released two years after in August 2002. It won 2003 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and the single “Clocks” was named Record of the Year. Coldplay’s second album was both critically and commercially acclaimed and was full of passionate themes of love and longing.

It opens with the thoroughly political song “Politik” written in response to the 9/11 New York bombings. It follows with the hauntingly sad “In My Place”, “Scientist” and “Clocks”. Although the songs can be very vague in terms of what they want to tell their listeners, the melody helps in delivering the message.

Now recognized as a serious band that can sell out shows as well as records, in 2005 Coldplay released X&Y which become the best-selling album of the year. Itchalked up almost 4 million record sales worldwide and debuted in the number 1 spot in 22 countries. The single “Fix You” became the theme song for the hopelessly in love while “Speed of Sound”, with its upbeat tempo was a commercial success.

The current album, titled Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends was released April of 2008. Coldplay continues to dominate the charts and record sales with the album selling 302,000 copies in three days. It has since been tagged as one of the “fastest-selling records in UK history”. Its carrier single, “Violet Hill” earned a place in UK’s Top 10 and the US Top 40. “Viva la Vida”, based on download sales alone became the UK number 1.

A New Star is Born In the Heights

It was a blockbuster-free zone when the Tony awards arrived this year with all the usual red-carpet excitement and promise. The winner of the Best Musical was “In the Heights”, a joyous celebration about chasing the American Dream and lottery winnings in Upper Manhattan Latino families. With its salsa-inspired rap numbers, and dynamic dancers and music, the show has been a hit amongst theater goers and critics alike.

Written and conceived by 28 year old Lin-Manuel Miranda while he was in college, the show features Miranda taking center stage, bounding around dynamically and punching out the rap-dialogue in a style many musical goers may be unaccustomed. And when taking the stage to accept his award he continued the style telling the audience “I used to dream about this moment, now I’m in it,” “Tell the conductor to hold the baton a minute.” And with a nod to Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, Miranda raps: “Look, Mr. Sondheim, I made a hat where there never was a hat and it’s a Latin hat at that.”

Miranda’s show is a window into modern Latino culture, perhaps with a positive spin, but a window nonetheless. His first Broadway show, Miranda wrote the score and all of the songs, as well as playing the lead role. He simply lights up the stage with a dazzling display and draws the viewer in. The show played off-Broadway for a season. The music is bright and vibrant and very modern. “In the Heights” also won awards for the score, orchestrations and choreography.

With no major blockbuster show taking all the awards this year, the prizes were shared around. Winners in the recent past such as Jersey Boys and Wicked are still playing to packed houses around Broadway. The revival musical “South Pacific” picked up seven wins including best revival and best actor — for the lead, Paulo Szot — in addition to four design awards and an award for best director, Bartlett Sher.

The Tony Awards were established in 1947 and are named after Atoinette Perry, whose nickname was Toni. Perry, who died in 1946, was an actress, stage director and philanthropist.

Delivering in the spirit of the much loved “cult” movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, Monty Python’s Spamalot has been delighting the crowds on Broadway since its first show in March 2005. The story takes a lot of licence on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and the spoof musical parodies all and sunder in its quest to bring the crowds to their knees in laughter. It pokes fun and laughs at the Arthurian legend and quaint old English mannerisms, and has a go at that great tradition that we love dearly: the Broadway musical!

There are lots of familiar references to Python offerings from the seventies that make it to the stage including ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, with nods to “the Lumberjack Song” and “Ministry of Silly Walks” sketch and the “Dead Parrot” sketch. Monty Python fans will love it and will relive some fond memories, and new audiences, unfamiliar with Monty Python, will gain a new appreciation of the peculiar British humour that is Monty Python.

Further lampooning targets in the show include a Lloyd Webber-esque power ballad “The Song Goes Like This” and a “Boy From Oz” style dance number “His Name is Lancelot”. Yentl and The Producers get an honourable dig the song “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway”.

Monty Python’s Spamalot received 14 Tony Award nominations, more than any other show in the 2004–2005 season. It won three awards:
• Best Musical
• Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Sara Ramirez)
• Best Direction of a Musical (Mike Nichols)

All ages will love this show and you are not going to want to miss the chance to see this musical! American Idol sets alight the digital download

America’s favorite show American Idol has finished and the outcome has been decided, and we knew David was going to win it – we just weren’t sure which one. In the end it was by a considerable margin, with 12 million votes, or 56 percent of the vote, and David Cook came out the clear winner of American Idol season 2008. The season finale was watched by 32 million viewers.

And to think that David Cook wasn’t even going to try out for Idol. It was his brother and an American Idol producer who talked him into going through with the audition. He grew up outside Kansas City, MO, and works as a barman, playing gigs around Tulsa, Okla. He has the experience of a small-show rock performer, and over the course of the series showed his versatility and style with a number of excellent renditions of well known rock/pop songs from artists as diverse as Michael Jackson (“Billie jean”), Collective Soul (“The World I Know”) and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”.

Already, David Cook’s marketability is on display and he is moving product. His first release-proper “The Night of My Life” debuted on the Billboard Top 100 at number 3 and number 1 on the digital download list. A couple of the songs he has sung throughout the show also show up in the Hot Digital Tracks chart, including his version of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, and “Dream Big”. It is a truly great thing to see that even songs that have not even been officially recorded or released can show up on the national charts.

Downloads went mad after the finale. Undercover.com reports that 1.5 million digital sales were generated following the finale of American Idol. And that wasn’t just for the American Idol stable of performers. David Cook sold 942,000 downloads, with second place getter David Archuletta selling 323,000 downloads. Guests on the final show also benefited from the exposure, with George Michael selling 83,000 tracks last week. Carrie Underwood sold 64,000 units, while ZZ Top's 'Sharp Dressed Man' was downloaded 14,000 times. Collective Soul's 'The World I Know' had a 1000% increase, selling 23,000 sales. OneRepublic's 'Apologize' sold 40,000 units. It did 6000 the previous week.

And what of the vanquished? Coming runner up in American idol is hardly a sentence to anonymity and a quick resumption of one’s former life. Seventeen year-old piano balladeer David Archuleta had a number of excellent performances in the final few shows of the series. Many tipped him as the eventual winner. The judges certainly thought he had the goods. But the voting public preferred the more confident Cook. Archuleta will join his top 12 colleagues for the 54 date tour across the nation through the summer. A seasoned performer will emerge, and it is a sure thing that we haven’t heard the end of David Archuleta.

After performing together at the 50th annual Grammy Awards, Beyonce’ called Tina Turner “the Queen”. And she is certainly known as the Queen of rock & roll or the Queen of R & B. And the Queen’s grand tour of 2008 just got grander. It is not billed as a farewell tour, but the concert-going public know when there is one show they do not want to miss. Due to unprecedented demand, six more concerts have been added to Tina Turner’s gruelling schedule, across the States.

As soon as the tour was announced anticipation began building and when tickets were released for the first show in Kansas City MO, they sold out within 2 minutes. This will be Tina Turner’s first tour since the record breaking and triumphant tour of 2000. She is rightly regarded as the first genuine female stadium rock superstar, selling out 120 stadiums across the US and Europe, and grossing $80 million in the US alone. It was the biggest tour of that year and the biggest ever undertaken by a female artist, performing to more than 2 million people.

In 2008, with 24 shows scheduled, what can the fans expect? Tina is known for her high-energy action packed performances and a song list that extends back to the mid sixties. “River Deep, Mountain High”, “Proud Mary”, “What’s Love Got to do With it” and “Nutbush City Limits” are some of the favourites that the crowd can expect. But the greatest treat will be seeing the first diva of rock & roll in full flight, after an extended absence. After this will we have to wait another eight years? This might be the last chance ever to see the great Tina in concert.

American Idol…it’s all over!

Yes it is true – we cant get enough of a good thing! Yes, we might well have had enough of Randy doing the “dawg”, Simon doing “the pompous scowl”, and Paula doing the “purdy but professional” for seven whole years. It’s been a long time since Kelly and Clay and Ruben. But this year the show has rolled out another fantastic menu of musical numbers, insightful and unwarranted feedback, a bit of friction on and off the set, yet still produced a wonderfully diverse and interesting group of finalists. It kept us thoroughly engaged for quite a few weeks.

With 49 shows scheduled, the Top 10 finalists will undertake a massive tour this summer. Like previous years, the shows are likely to be a mix of some of the great highlights of the onscreen journey, and some of those stirring group numbers.

If you have missed out on the excitement so far, the top two were:

David Archuleta: This 17-year old baby-faced high school student has excelled on American Idol. Archuleta’s heartfelt ballads and strong vocals make the young girls scream, and have earned him a massive nationwide fan base

David Cook: Beginning with a brilliant performance of Lionel Richie’s “Hello”, this guitar-playing rocker has brought something original to his performances each week. It is likely that David Cook will be among the American Idol concert tour’s biggest draws this year.
David and David were favourites throughout the series to make it to the final.

Ramiele Malubay: This pint-sized dynamo has a huge voice that made her an early favorite to win American Idol. She’s at her best on the uptempo pop songs, and her personality wins the room.

Chikezie Eze – Known on American Idol by his first name, Chikezie takes risks across genres as diverse as R&B, pop, and country. This L.A. native promises to be an exciting live performer on the American Idol stage.

Song sung Caroline – Neil Diamond’s greatest song?

There will always be a great deal of interest in the genesis of one of the greatest love songs of the 1960s. To fans across the world, it is one of the most recognisable songs of the 60s, a lively, catchy song to a girl known simply as Sweet Caroline. Now, 40 years after its release, the singer and songwriter Neil Diamond has revealed the inspiration behind the song: the Caroline in the song was Caroline Kennedy, now the only surviving child of President John F Kennedy.

Diamond, 66, revealed how he had never revealed the origins of the song with anyone, preferring to keep it to himself until the day he actually met Caroline face to face.
Diamond opened up, telling both the press and the song's subject about its origin, when he finally met the now Caroline Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg, and performed the song for her 50th birthday. He stated that the song was quite important to him and one of his first really big hits, going onto to be a massive seller. “I have to thank her for the inspiration," he said. The song really made his mark and left the public in no two minds that Neil was a great songwriter and performer.

He told Associated Press that he was happy to have gotten it off his chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. “I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy."

The motivation for the song came from a photograph of the then nine-year-old Kennedy the singer saw in a magazine while staying at a hotel in Memphis.
"It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony," Diamond said. "It was such an innocent, wonderful picture; I immediately felt there was a song in there."

A few years later, Diamond penned the song inspired by the photograph. It became a hit, reviving his flagging career and eventually selling more than 2 million copies and providing countless karaoke singers with a chance to shine.

Ever popular the song recently reappeared in the singles chart in the US, thanks in part to the fact that it is belted out during home games at Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox baseball team. "I think they consider it good luck," Diamond told the Associated Press, adding that the Red Sox have become his favourite baseball team.

It’s 1st June, 2005 and three years less a month or so since I last saw Neil Diamond perform here at Earls Court. I’m wondering if this could be a mistake because the 2002 concert was so fantastic and Neil so charismatic that I’m not sure if he can possibly live up to my, now very high, expectations.

The atmosphere is electric in the 17,000-odd seat arena and I wish that Neil would hurry up and get on stage. I don’t have to wait long. The band, all 12 pieces, emerge through the floor of the stage and the show begins with “Crunchy Granola Suite”, swiftly followed by more vintage Diamond.

Neil is just the same - the black trousers, the sparkly shirt, the energy, the voice, the charm and the mixture of panache and passion with which he delivers the timeless favourites.

Contrary to expectations, there is nothing from his imminent new album, but a sort of a preview in the form of a set of acoustic numbers including “And The Grass Don’t Pay No Mind”, a personal favourite of mine which Neil performs sitting down with his guitar.

Some of the oldies have been given a slightly new treatment in terms of arrangement, but the voice, the centrepiece, is the same. In tribute to UB40s hit with Red Red Wine, Neil starts to rap part way through. I’m not sure that I don’t prefer the original though. “Forever in Blue Jeans” introduces some interesting brass and harmonies from the three backing singers (one more than last time)

The patriotic “America” brings the crowd to their feet (even the London crowd) and “Sweet Caroline”, as ever, makes everyone sing along, our enthusiasm encouraging Neil to a couple of encores.

Except for those rare seated moments, Neil roams the stage with his usual energy, encouraging the crowd (as if they need it) and generally looking as though he is having a good time. He has the ladies in the audience practically swooning through the slightly suggestive “Play Me” and his sotto voce asides nearly bring them to their knees.

For me, apart from “And The Grass Don’t Pay No Mind”, the highlights were “Desirée” (missing from the 2002 tour) and “You Don’t Bring Me Flower”, once again in duet with Linda Press and an encore of the fabulous“I’ve Been This Way Before”.

I can’t believe how fantastic this show is, the lights, the music, the skill and camaraderie of the band but above all, the sheer presence and unmistakeable voice that is Neil Diamond.

The album was originally going to be called Trimondo Blondomina, meaning "three blond guys (dominating the world)," but the band did not want another title referring to "blond" so that title was dropped. They reached a consensus with Zenyatta Mondatta. Zenyatta Mondatta is supposedly a composite of several things. "Zen" comes from the eastern religion. "Yatta" is rumored to have ties to Kenyatta (the leader of the Mau Mau's of Congo-Zaire-Kenya). "Mond" comes from "Monde" - the French word for world. The whole thing was then articulated in such a way to sound like "Reggatta." Another possibility is that the title came from "Zenith" and "Monde," which means "Top of the World." A third theory: In Japanese, Zenyatta Mondatta allegedly has a somewhat rude meaning: "gave money, gave a massage."
"Don't Stand So Close to Me," the album's first single, became the group's second number one single in the U.K. and in America, the single became their second Top Ten hit in the spring of 1981. Earlier that year "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" made it to number ten. By the beginning of 1981, the Police were able to sell out Madison Square Garden, and were rising in the ranks of the worlds most celebrated artists.
Sting was reported as having stated that he regretted the rushed recording for the album. However, many critics would later cite it as one of their strongest efforts evidenced by the album winning two Grammy awards. The instrumental "Behind My Camel," written by Andy Summers won the band a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song "Don't Stand So Close to Me" won the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance For Duo Or Group.

The Police finish world tour in New York

The Police are ending their world tour in New York City on August 4, 2008. There are 30 new US dates announced for May and July. Elvis Costello and The Imposters will be the opening act for The Police on the May & July legs of the tour. After completing the tour, the band will not release any albums of new music. Apparently the band members will go their separate ways and continue where they left off - working on their own individual projects.

The Police have been nominated for a People's Choice Award. The show aired on January 8, 2008. They were nominated in the category "Favorite Reunion Tour." They did not win.

Famous auction house Christie's held a Pop and Rock Memorabilia sale in New York which featured some Sting and Police items; part of the Ian Copeland estate. The sale was held on November 30, 2007 and included vintage concert posters, many record awards and a Rolling Stone cover plaque.

On October 1, 2007, The Police were honored in Paris, France, with an award called "Order of the Arts and Letters" for their contribution to the arts.

On September 29, at their Paris concert, The Police were joined on stage by original Police guitarist, Frenchman Henry Padovani, for the song Next to You.

In September, 2007 in London, there was a new photo exhibit featuring pics from the early days of The Police, called On The Beat: The Police. The exhibition ran from Wednesday, September 5th - Sunday, September 23rd

It is hard to believe that there are many concert goers and music lovers who may not know the name of Neil Diamond! They may know Miley, Hilary, Kelly or the Jonas Brothers, but when you ask them what thier favourite Neil Diamond song is, they glaze over.

Neil Diamond has has been a pop music stalwart since the mid-1960s. His songs, compositions, and performances are legendary. He has had numerous hit songs such as "Kentucky Woman" (1967), "Song Sung Blue" (1974) and "Love on the Rocks" (1980).

In the early 1960s, he wrote the Monkees' 1967 hit "I'm a Believer" around the time he began his own recording career. On the strength of a string of hits, Diamond became one of the best selling performers of the 1970s.

His devoted fan base carried him through the 1980s and in the 1990s he was rediscovered by a new generation of retro-loving pop fans. Tonight each of the contestants sang two songs from Diamond’s extensive song collection. David and David were easily the best two contestants tonight. I still believe they are likely to face off in the finals.

Miley is back

Putting the controversy about those Vanity Fair shots behind her, Miley returned to the stage this Saturday. Sharing the concert bill with Jonas Brothers and the Cheetah Girls, Miley bounced back to full form in Florida for a special Disney Channel performance.

With no mention of the Vanity Fair issue, the 15 year old star of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana performed several songs in a concert that will be included in the forthcoming Disney Channel Games.
